After weeks of unhealthy levels of nitrous oxide (NO) in GMHs operating room, hospital management finally tested the Air and discovered that NO levels exceeded 100ppm (50ppm is the acceptable max). NO is an anesthetic which is the responsibility of an anesthesiologist and should be monitored regularly to ensure safe air quality. Unfortunately, after first stating that the OR was shut down for maintenance, upon questioning they attempted to blame a nurse for leaving a valve open. An open valve, does not take days to repair, it take seconds to turn off and minutes to refresh the air. This is a horrible situation that endangers lives of workers and patients and appropriate protocols need to be in place so that everyone is protected in the future.
