Last week students at 10 public schools received not only a nutritious breakfast and lunch but they received all of their education as well because their school’s cafeterias were run by public servants and were not a for profit contractor! When Cafeterias are run by public servants not only are they more cost effective but the food is prepared by workers that are a part of the educational community that care about the students they are serving meals to; receive paid sick leave so that they don’t have to come to work when they have the flu and all of their paychecks (as meager as they are) stay in our economy as opposed to being shipped off island in corporate profits. For these and many more reasons we need to do what works for all of our children and people not just a wealthy few. It’s time public servants rejoin our educational community and take back over our school cafeterias.
