A strong union presence will help our island’s economy because it gives power to workers to fight for better wages, benefits, and fair treatment at their workplace. A good balance between management and their employees leads to high morale, better productivity and a better quality of life. Unions will help build a stronger middle class that our island desperately needs. We need workers that can support their family and still have money to spend on restaurants, shopping, movie theaters, etc. We can get out of this economic downfall by implementing changes that gear towards the needs of our working families. In January of this year, during President Obama’s announcement of a Task Force on Middle Class Working Families, he stated, “We need to level the playing field of workers and the unions that represent their interests, because we know that you cannot have a strong middle class without a strong labor movement…When workers are prospering, they buy products that make businesses prosper. We can be competitive and lean and mean and still create a situation where workers are thriving in this country.”
