GovGuam’s solution to fixing our economy has always been gutting our public structure. Elected leaders have been protecting the profits of the rich and powerful with tax breaks and placing the burden on our workers by cutting their jobs. Cutting jobs won’t help Guam’s economy and will hurt all our families. You may be the lucky person not being laid off but if your sibling or close relative is affected, then who will be knocking on your door for help?

WILL TEACHERS TAKE ON THE ROLE OF SUPPORT STAFF?
Although the Governor is exempting DOE from the lay-offs, there is a chance support staff will be cut. Without school aids monitoring students before and after school and during lunch and breaks, teachers might have to take on their role. Luckily our teachers’ contract distinctly states what duties our teachers shall not be required to perform. However with the rate our Government’s administration has been going, who knows what cuts they will try and implement in the renewal of the teachers’ contract.

WELFARE & FOOD STAMPS WILL INCREASE
Eligibility specialists in Guam’s Department of Public Health and Social Services are extremely overwhelmed with thousands of applicants for food stamps and welfare programs. Cutting hundreds of jobs from public workers is only going to put additional strain in the department. Payless supermarkets and other businesses that receive thousands of federal dollars from food stamps and welfare won’t get affected but movie theaters, retail stores, and restaurants will probably lose a lot more local customers.
