UOG Graduate Students of ED611 School Personnel Management invited President Matt Rector to speak with the class about GFT’s current negotiations and other union news and updates. President Rector discussed the importance of Collective Bargaining Agreements and compared it with classroom management, “setting up rules and making sure they are followed.” Students were enthusiastic to ask questions on issues such as the fairness of the Hay Study, comparison of the old Defined Benefit Plan and the Defined Contribution Plan, common concerns members call the GFT Office for, and the furlough battle just to name a few. Rector explained that GFT will be ramping up a couple of campaigns to implement in the Teachers’ contract and in the next fiscal year budget that will be voted on in the legislature. The students showed a lot of interest in issues surrounding our teachers and seem very motivated to support our upcoming campaigns.
