The disaster in Japan could endanger Guam’s families; therefore GFT has put together a guide on how to protect our families from radiation poisoning and its long term effects. Guam’s people are still suffering today from being down-winders of the nuclear tests in Bikini Atoll but this time we can and will be prepared. Obviously there is no immediate danger and hopefully there never will be. Unfortunately, there is a great potential for the situation in Japan to get much worse before it gets better. Guam has seen smog from China and Japan drop on our island before so stay tuned, stay informed and be prepared.

PREPARE YOUR HOUSE: If radioactive material falls on Guam, then there will probably be only a couple of hours of notice and very little time to prepare so it is best to get your house ready now. The safest place to be is inside a concrete building that has been as sealed as possible.

SEAL WINDOWS AND DOORS: Tape plastic sheeting over all windows, doors or any other openings into the house, including Air-conditioning, water pipes or power penetrations. It is better to seal on the outside of your house first and keep a supply of tape and plastic sheets inside the house to double seal or reseal any leaks if the plastic is damaged from the outside. Duct or Masking tape will work fine. The more sealed the better. Wet towels under doors will help as well.

STOCK UP ON CANNED FOOD: If there is radioactive fallout, then the safest place to be is inside your house. Make sure that you have enough food and water in the house to feed your family for at least a week.

HAVE A SUPPLY OF PLASTIC BAGS: If anyone is caught outside, then they should get in the house as quick as possible, remove all clothing and seal in a plastic bag which should be placed as far away from family as possible.

STOCK UP ON CRITICAL MEDICINES: Refill all critical prescriptions and have at least a two week supply on hand.

STAY CONNECTED: Stay tuned to local radio and TV stations and follow Matt Rector on Twitter or Facebook for instant updates.

I’M AT WORK, SCHOOL, STORE ETC WHEN THE WARNING COMES WHAT DO I DO?:
Get home or to your safe zone as soon as possible.
Remove all clothing and seal in a plastic bag.
Shower and wash as thoroughly as possible to wash off any radioactive dust.
Re-check house for any possible leaks and seal them with tape and plastic.
Turn off all wall type, or package central air conditioners that could possibly bring air in from the outside. Split units should be fine as they recycle the air in the house.
Turn on the radio and stay indoors until the all clear is declared by civil defense.

REMEMBER THIS IS ONLY A WORST CASE SCENARIO AND NO ONE SHOULD PANIC!!!
