WORKERS’ MEMORIAL DAY

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were about 4,340 fatal work injuries in 2009 and about 50,000 deaths from occupational diseases! Since the passage of the Occupational Safety and Health Act, safety in the workplace has improved but workers are still at risk. The heroic workers in Japan’s nuclear plants, working to save the lives of millions of families, are perfect examples of the risks our workers take when doing their job. Whether you are a fire fighter saving families from a burning house, a construction work handling heavy machinery or a nurse taking care of a sickly patient, workers put their lives on the line every day. Workers’ Memorial Day was just a couple days ago where we honor workers who have died or were injured on the job. Today’s historic breaking news of the end of Osama Bin Laden reminds us of the tragic events of 9/11 and the workers who risked their lives saving thousands of people.
