The U.S. Department of Education has announced that Parent PLUS loans now qualify for student loan debt relief under the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program, but only for two months. Until now, the loans, typically held by parents who took on debt for their children and often added it to their own, were not eligible for PSLF, the program that cancels student debt after 10 years of public service and 10 years’ worth of loan payments. The rule change will make thousands more borrowers eligible for relief, but applications must be filled out by midnight on April 30. Learn more on the AFT’s PSLF page.
