GDOE CLASSES CANCELLED

In a press release issued Monday, April 6, 2020, GDOE Superintendent Jon Fernandez announced the decision to close GDOE facilities and cancel classes for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year. This comes as COVID-19 continues to spread on Guam and health experts recommend social distancing to help flatten the curve.

GDOE has not yet made a decision regarding graduation ceremonies for the class of 2020.

SBG Parent Information and Input Meetings

The Guam Department of Education Division of Curriculum and Instruction is hosting more information and input sessions regarding the GDOE Standards-Based Grading Initiative. Two meetings have already been held and the remaining meetings are as follows:

Wednesday, March 11- 6 pm – 7:30 pm: Marcial Sablan Elementary School

Thursday, March 12- 6 pm – 7:30 pm: MU Lujan Elementary School

Monday, March 16- 6 pm – 7:30 pm: George Washington High School

SBG TEACHERS SURVEY NOW AVAILABLE

The survey for teachers on Standards-Based Grading (SBG) will be available to teachers until Friday, March 6. The intent of the survey is to gauge the level of acceptance amongst teachers to better inform the Guam Education Board and GDOE administrators in planning the progression of SBG. This survey is in collaboration with GFT, administrators, and the teacher leaders who work with SBG. If you haven’t received the survey, please contact your principal or school administrator.

GFT 2020 Election

The GFT At-Large Election will take place Friday, February 28, 2020. The candidates for the Treasurer position are Lisa Mosher and Mary Jean Vigilante. Candidate information can be found at gftunion.com.
In order to vote, you must be a member in good standing on or before February 28, 2020 and bring a valid ID. Absentee voting will be permitted from 8am-5pm Monday, February 24 – Thursday, February 27 at the GFT Office.
To best accommodate all voting members, the election will take place at various work sites throughout the island. For additional information, voting times and locations, please contact the GFT office at 735-4390, contact your Union Steward, or visit gftunion.com.
Uncontested winners from this election are Timothy Fedenko (President), Sanjay Sharma (Vice-President) and Corazon Mucho (Secretary). Officer installation/Delegate election will take place at the 13th Annual Convention.

GDOE ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR PILOT PREKINDERGARTEN PROGRAM

Prekindergarten is returning to GDOE schools. Beginning in the 2020-2021 school year, The Guam Department of Education will have pre-K classes at the following elementary schools:

Finegayan Elementary School: 632-9364

J.Q. San Miquel Elementary School: 477-9368

Lyndon B. Johnson Elementary School: 646-8058

Marcial Sablan Elementary School: 565-2238

Applications will be available at the school sites starting on February 12th. Children must be 4 years old by July 31, 2020 and must live in one of the participating school districts. Parents must provide proof of residency along with the application. The final day to submit applications is April 24.

Due to limited space in each classroom, a lottery will be held to determine a child’s participation if the number of applicants exceeds the number of available slots.
