The departure of another Superintendent only exemplifies how incredibly important it is for our children to have consistency in their educational system. For the last 40 years the only thing that has been consistent with Guams public schools is the teachers collective bargaining agreement which protects the teaching and learning process. Over the last fifteen years the structure and management of GPSS has gone through multiple changes, and while some of those various entities have attempted to destroy public education by waging war on teachers and their union we have always prevailed. Even though the legislature has consistently underfunded public education by half, dedicated union teachers have consistently done amazing things for our kids thanks in part to their CBA which has always protected the teaching and learning environment in the classroom.
Only a teacher knows what a relief those five words are. No matter how dedicated, talented, or committed a teacher is, doing the job takes a heavy toll. Which is why summer is a much needed battery recharger. Anyone that disbelieves this is invited to take GFTs Work a Day in our Shoes challenge, where a non-teacher spends an entire day doing a teachers job. There is a reason GPSS is short over 400 fully qualified teachers. If anyone would like to take the challenge just hit reply and your name will be placed on the list for next school year.
